What 2011 Movies do you Love?

I’ve been thinking, seriously, about subscribing to Netflix in order to catch up on some of the movies I didn’t get to see in theaters. I have a really short list so far and don’t know if the cost would be worth it. To those ends I ask all my readers a big favor…

Recently I read a really great review by a fellow blogger whose posts are go to for me when it comes to movies. I’d read a lot about Chronicle (2012) and most of those reviews said the movie engendered a lot of interest in it’s super power subject but ended up being disappointing in the end. In contrast, Brent raved about the film, and so far it’s his pick for movie of the year (with the thought that the summer blockbusters to come will probably push it down his list). He talked at great length how the director used different techniques to show character instead of telling the audience with some sort of hackneyed dialogue. While reading this stellar post (read it for yourself here) I had the thought that I probably missed so many really great movies this past year and I wouldn’t even know how to go about gathering a list!

On a side note: I’m a rabid movie fan but this past year – 2011 – was only able to get out for a small handful of movies through circumstances out of my control. I’m hoping this will change in 2012 but for the 2011 movies I missed…I somehow need to catch up!

Combined with the fact that I’m considering subscribing to Netflix services…I’d really love to hear your opinions about what movies (however great or small) I should catch up on from 2011. Your choices don’t have to be the best movies of the year, blockbusters or Oscar picks…just movies you remember. I would love for you to include at least a couple choices, why I should see them and why you loved them so much!

These are the movies already on my list:

I know there are bound to be a lot more I haven’t seen…thanks for your suggestions!

    • Thanks! I really appreciate your comment. (It took a while to reply as I’ve been working on a mega project and just finished it tonight!) Drive and The Artist have been on many people’s list and I really am looking forward to Drive especially. I looked up the others but couldn’t find Submarine or The Beginners… Cheers!

  2. Thanks everyone for stopping to share your thought! You have been a great help and I look forward to writing reviews for all these movies as I have the opportunity to view them. I’ve already knocked The Help off this list with the help of a friend so I’m off to a good start. Look for my post on the Adaption either today or tomorrow! Cheers :)

  3. Tin Tin; The Artist, X-Men; Tinker, Tailor; Hugo; Midnight in Paris; Mission Impossible.
Those were all very good. For writers, Midnight in Paris is outstanding. For movie buffs, The Artist and Hugo are superb.

  4. Ugh, I’m going stir-crazy over here! Turns out ‘recovery’ is very, very boring. I just had to see what you were writing about currently, and thankfully, I have three posts to comment on from you!

If you want my two cents on some of the movies I remember most fondly from 2011, I’d go with X-Men: First Class, Bridesmaids, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas, Hugo, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Kung Fu Panda 2, and Horrible Bosses. These aren’t the year’s best movies in any case, nor are most of them award winners, but they’re just movies I remember because they were either especially well-made or fun or memorable.

American Netflix apparently has a much greater selection than my own Netflix here in Canada, so subscribing to it will probably be a great way to keep on top of all of 2011′s best offerings I’d think!

  5. I think I watch TOO many movies! :D I am still catching up on some myself…
    I will atttach my top 15 list–http://nediunedited.com/2012/02/19/
To round up to 20, Check out Hugo–War Horse–Tintin-The Descendants and Young Adult
    Have fun!!

  6. I watch way too many movies…not all of them good…and Netflix sometimes does not help my addiction (or my subscription to Hulu plus).
More Indie Type movies: The Pill – Interesting topic, characters pull you in, watched it just last night (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1691154/), Dirty Girl – More to it than meets the eye (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1107319/); Detachment – Adrien Brody enough said (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1683526/)
Comedy: Just Go With It – a mindless comedy that I really enjoyed (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1564367/); Bridesmaids – Hilarious (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1478338/); Midnight in Paris – Woody Allen at his best (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1605783/); Crazy, Stupid, Love – Loved this (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1570728/)
Thriller/Action..y: Source Code- Jake and a good mind bender (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0945513/); Fast Five – guilty pleasure of mine (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1596343/); Contagion- the epidemiologist in me loved it…very realistic to what would happen (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1598778/); Drive – Ryan Gosling and cars *smiles* (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780504/); Immortals – if just for the visual amazingness (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1253864/)
Inspirational: Soul Surfer – gotta love based off true story movies sometimes! (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1596346/)

And some not 2011 that are just kind of great as well: Welcome to the Rileys (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1183923/), Elvis and Annabelle (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0787462/), Flipped-One of my favorites (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0817177/), Revenge of the Bridesmaids-silly ABC movie fun but funny writing and on Netflix! (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1666642/); The Trip – dialogue driven and funny () (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1740047/)

I get way too much joy recommending books and movies. Hope you get to watch some of them!

  7. Where to begin? I still can’t say what the best picture of the year was but for me the most memorable movie, the one that still sticks in my mind, was Shame and the most enjoyable – and most likely to cleanse your palette of that perversion – was The Descendants.

Some lesser known surprises were The Yellow Sea ( Think Breaking Bad with a big budget and South Korean sensibilities), Tabloid ( one of those WTF stories stretched over ninety minutes over unadulterated incredulity thanks to Morris’s master crafting) And to calm you down after them perhaps a bit of Buck.

I could go on but I don’t want To hot the list space, I’m one of those sad people who saw everything there was last year though so feel free to just scroll through the titles on my page, or have a look at this out-pf-date retrospective here ( deerinthexenonarclights.com/the-year-in-review-film/ ) if you want even more titles. ( Not trying to spam, it’s just that this comment has gotten long enough already!)

Will look forward to your reviews once you do start watching, I can see a novel length text coming on in a few months about all this.
